Hello! In this blog, I will be discussing the importance of family and all the things I learn from my Family Relations class. I will share insights and personal opinions about several topics I learn throughout the semester. I am excited about all the things I will share and can't wait to get started.

The Family Week 1

The first thing we discussed in class was population. The population of the world is growing more readily than ever. In fact, the world is supposed to reach 10 billion before 2060. Yet, for some reason, the fertility rate is dropping. When I first heard this I thought, that does not make any sense. Women are having fewer and fewer children than they used to. During the Baby Boom in 1946-1964, the average woman was having 3.8 children. That may not seem like very many, but that is actually a lot more than you think. The average now is 1.64. But why are they having fewer children? If you look around at the families you know, you can see that there are not as many large families anymore like there used to be. It used to be normal to have lots of kids. What happened? Week 5: Dating

This week we discussed dating. Dating is so important when it comes to finding your forever person. Chances are, you aren’t going to marry the first person you like. Going on dates with lots of people allows you to find people with your shared interests, standards, and values. I had a boyfriend in high school and so we went to every school dance together and we never really dated other people. Looking back on high school, I wasted so much time because we ended up not being compatible. I highly recommend high schoolers to date around and not have a serious relationship with a single person. Dating is so much more fun when you’re young. It’s important not to get into a serious relationship if you’re not ready, and don’t have dating experience. I have a friend who has asked me a lot of questions about dating and asked questions like “How did you know he was the one?” “Isn’t it scary before you get married since you are going to be with  that person forever?” “What if you choose the wr...

Week 11- Children and Parenting

  This week we talked about children. Children have needs, just like everyone does. One of those needs includes contact belonging. Not all families are super touchy, but all children need some form of contact. Children also need undue attention. They seek attention constantly, and it can be harmful if they do not get any. Children who lack attention begin to starve for it and will do anything to get it, even if the response is negative. As a parent, offer contact freely. It might get difficult as children get older and do not want that contact, but it will do more good than bad. When I was in high school my dad would always give me hugs every single day and I would always say “Noooo Dad stop,” but looking back I am so glad he did that and it really showed he cares about me. Other mistaken approaches children have are rebellion and controlling others.
